It's a corruption of the Japanese phrase, "Nu'u bi an", meaning "sew beautiful sweet bean paste."

It's a scientific term from the field of biochemistry.
nu (n): the 13th letter of the Greek alphabet

Therefore a nubian is an specific type of organic carbon compound with thirteen components.

Well of course you realize that Doug Chiang, the guy what designed the vehicles in the prequels, is Chinese, which isn't the same as Japanese but they look the same so it doesn't matter. Anyway, he often used the ancient Japanese traditional method of sculpting spaceship maquettes with bean paste in the initial design stages. But when left overnight, the paste would attract cockroaches, which would get stuck in the material, which is the only explaination I can think of for why he put those FREAKIN' BUG LEGS on EVERYTHING!

What does this thread have to do with Odyssee Pictures?

That's a good question. The Auto-sickle (aka bi-sickle, hah..) was something I wrote into the script in the original draft, however the original concept was quite different. I described it as a clean, almost surgical instrument that he would hide in his coat, and would have a small blade that would pop out when he triggered it. A portable sickle.

Mike's first reaction was that, basically, he didn't know how to even go about making something that would have to appear so carefully crafted and polished. He said it would be a lot easier to do something with a more home made look, and commented that it could be a lot creepier anyway. I wasn't sure at first, but when he started talking springs and wingnuts, I was on board 100%.

Se he drew up a concept of this table leg or stairway banister with a rusty blade that popped out using a spring and a series of screws and wingnuts. He drew a little, curved blade on it, and I said "no, way bigger", so he drew this really long blade on the same sketch. He and I stared at it for a minute and I think we were thinking the same thing... "can't it have both??" And the autosickle was born. As a matter of function, he suggested that the smaller one be the curved, sickle-like blade for killing, and the longer one be straight and serrated for chopping heads off.. I think I had written the choppings as single, swift blows, but he wasn't seeing that happening realistically. Of course I'm like "what is this word you use, realistic? this is moon man language to me."

I don't remember who's idea it was to have an angel on the top, but I quickly wrote it into the script with a broken wing (for reasons observant viewers will see in the film).

The concept of the homemade sickle went deeper than just being creepier then a surgical instument. I wanted something to reflect the killer's psychosis. I wanted you to imagine him going around his grandmother's house, breaking pieces off furniture and digging in the garage for rusty tools, and then sitting all night at his kitchen table under an old desk lamp obsessively piecing this thing together. Plus, something we both instantly recognized when the drawing was first made, was that this would make Freddy's claws look like a baby toy.

The drawings, by the way, were done at Jack-In-The-Box on napkins.
