Sometimes I just want to be scared. When there is gallons and gallons of blood and gore i tend to laugh in enjoyment not fear. Sometimes I just want to see something fucking scarey. But that's just me... _________________ -dave

I can't think of a horror film that's actually scared me since I was a kid. There are lots of shock films, but where are all the actual scary ones?

Yeah, one of my favorite recent horror films was the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But as awesome as I thought it was, I was really just sitting there thinking "wow this is really cool... this is well done... this is shot well.. they did the police chief really well in this one..." but I never felt fear.
So the question is this: can a horror film still be scarry to an adult? Or have horror films just gone down the drain? Are they not scarry because we are desensitized, or are they just plain not scarry anymore?
I for one would be more likely to feel actual fear from a psychological drama than a straight up horror film.
Obviously this is one of the issues I wanted to tackle in Necrophobia. I feel part of the problem may be too much pay off too fast. My theory is that by drawing the tension out further without payoff, you create a generally creepy, uneasy mood that puts the viewer in a state of fear.
Another approach that works well is to mix horror with psychological drama, ala Silence of the Lambs. Had that film been even more violent, the horrific effect would have probably been even more powerful because of the characters and storyline at stake.
