Check out last year's Houston winner Scripted from Texaswood, produced by the new 48 Hour Project Houston Coordinator Laura Schlecht. Then meet Laura at this month's HFO First Monday Mixer, and network with other filmmakers to build your team for this year's competition! The Houston round takes place on the weekend of May 18-20, do you have what it takes to be a 48 Hour Filmmaker?

Stormtroopers of the Apocalypse

Add to My Profile | More Videos
This month we're turning the spotlight to a group of filmmakers spread across Houston, Texas, and all over the world, who answered the call when Robert Rodriguez and SXSW Film Festival issued a challenge to create a two-minute fictitious grindhouse trailer in less than thirty days for a special contest. The resulting dozens of mind-blowing trailers created by passionate, run-and-gun filmmakers with volunteer cast and crew were nothing short of a bolt of lighting from a clear sky.

See a collection of these films and hear war stories from Houston filmmakers involved in the challenge this Monday at the HFO mixer! A special thanks goes out to the 501 Theater for helping to provide the content for this amazing showcase!

Here is a sample of these trailers: Stormtroopers of the Apocalypse created in Houston by Stacy Davidson and shot partially inside Fitzgerald's! Stormtroopers was featured last month, but rest assured we have a whole new lineup of grindhouse trailers this month!

A look at February 5th mixer panelist Mel House

January 25, 2007

Biography on Closet Space co-writer/director Mel House

Ever since he did a 3rd grade book report on Christine, Mel House knew that horror was to be his lot in life. After a brief attempt at majoring in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas, Mel promptly changed his major to film and never looked back. He quickly amassed a number of independent film credits in a variety of on-set positions, all the while working towards his own feature.

Mel's debut movie Fade To Black premiered at the Bare Bones Film Festival in 2001, where it won the Grand Jury Award. Since then, Mel has DP'ed the horror movie Drawing Blood, the documentary Electric Purgatory - the fate of the black rocker, and he returned to the director's chair with Witchcraft 13: Blood Of The Chosen, (garnering some of the best reviews for the long-running series).

Recently, he served as Unit Production Manager on LA film company Nott Entertainment's follow-up their Anchor Bay-released The Quick and the Undead, a Dallas, TX lensed horror feature called The Flesh Keeper.

Co-writing, directing and editing Closet Space marks Mel's most ambitious project to date.... but he feels that it will soon be outstripped by Closet Space 2. Mel still firmly believes that A Nightmare on Elm Street, Ringu, Dawn Of The Dead (the original), Oldboy, and Donnie Darko are among the greatest cinematic achievements of the last 30 years.

In addition to his deep involvement in film, Mel also plays guitar and sings in a loud rock band and reviews music for Space City Rock.

You can see Mel House speak about his upcomming film Closet Space on February 5th at the HFO First Monday Mixer!

Praises for Necrophobia's Morgan McCarthy

January 19, 2007

The Houston Press has just written a raving review for Morgan McCarthy's (Necrophobia, Closet Space, The Fleshkeeper) stage performance in Bell, Book and Candle.

"Casting directors take note: There's a new face in town (new to us, anyway), and it belongs to one of the most strikingly original actors we've seen in a long time -- Morgan McCarthy, now setting the stage afire at Country Playhouse as the enchantingly sexy witch Gillian in John Van Druten's 1950 romantic comedy. Young McCarthy, fresh out of the University of St. Thomas, needs no potions nor spells to bewitch, bother and bewilder; she performs her theatrical magic without tricks and so totally inhabits her character, it's difficult to tell where her prodigious powers might lead."

You can see the show currently at the Country Playhouse through February 3rd.
